When an air conditioner is described as a “7kW unit”, that 7kW is its cooling output — how much heat it can shift out of the room. It is not how much electricity it draws.

A modern inverter split moves roughly three to four units of heat for every one unit of electricity it consumes. So a 7kW system typically draws somewhere around 2kW from the wall, not 7kW. People who assume otherwise talk themselves out of using their air conditioner on the basis of a number that is three or four times too high.

The ratio is published on the energy label as the EER (cooling) or COP (heating). Higher is better. Most current residential splits sit between 3.2 and 4.5.

Work Out Your Own Number

Three inputs, one line of arithmetic:

Input power (kW) × hours run × (cents per kWh ÷ 100) = dollars per day

  1. Input power. Read it off the energy label or the spec sheet — look for “rated input” or “power input, cooling”. If you cannot find it, divide the cooling capacity by 3.5 for a rough estimate.
  2. Hours. Be honest, and note that a system does not draw full power the whole time it is switched on — see below.
  3. Your tariff. Read the c/kWh off your own bill. South East Queensland usage rates sit broadly in the mid-to-high twenties in 2026; the examples below use 27c/kWh, which is close to the SEQ average. Your rate may differ by several cents either way, so substitute yours.

The cycling caveat. An air conditioner only draws its rated power while working hard. Once the room reaches temperature, an inverter system throttles right down. Over a typical evening, average draw lands around 55–70% of rated. Both figures are shown below — the “flat out” column is the theoretical ceiling, the “realistic” column is what you will actually see.

Two things stand out. First, cooling one bedroom overnight is genuinely cheap — well under a dollar. Second, ducted is not four times worse than a split unless you run it like it is; zoning is the whole game on a ducted system.

The Five Things That Actually Move the Number

1. The thermostat setpoint

The biggest lever by a distance, and it is free. Each degree cooler costs roughly 5–10% more to run, because the system works harder and runs longer to hold it. Dropping from 24°C to 20°C can plausibly add a third to your cooling bill. In Brisbane, 24–25°C is comfortable for most people once the humidity is out of the air.

2. Coil and filter condition

A blocked filter or a coil furred with biofilm restricts airflow and cripples heat transfer. The system compensates by running longer for the same result.
