Most people think of an air conditioner as a machine that makes air colder. In a humid climate that is only half its job, and usually the smaller half.

Air conditioning engineers split the work into two parts. Sensible load is the heat you can feel and measure on a thermometer. Latent load is the energy tied up in the water vapour suspended in the air — and pulling that vapour back out to liquid takes a surprising amount of it. On a sticky Brisbane afternoon in February, a meaningful share of everything your system is doing goes into wringing water out of the air rather than dropping its temperature.

2. Mould, biofilm and the smell that comes with them

A coil that is wet for months at a time will grow things. The musty odour that hits you for the first thirty seconds after switching on — sometimes called dirty sock syndrome — is microbial growth on a damp evaporator being blown into the room.

It is not cosmetic. That layer insulates the coil, so heat transfer drops, run times lengthen and the system dehumidifies less effectively, which keeps the coil wetter still. Once it takes hold, wiping the filters will not shift it; the coil itself needs a chemical clean.

3. Salt air and coil corrosion

Humidity plus salt is considerably worse than humidity alone.   • Set the fan to AUTO, not CONTINUOUS. A commonly missed one. On CONTINUOUS the fan keeps blowing after the compressor stops, and re-evaporates the water sitting on the coil straight back into the room. You have just paid to remove that moisture and then put it back.
  • Run a slightly higher setpoint for longer. 24–25°C with a long, steady run dehumidifies far better than 21°C in short bursts — and costs less. Dry air at 25°C feels better than damp air at 22°C.
  • Rinse the outdoor coil if you are near the bay. Fresh water, gentle pressure, twice a year. Free, and it measurably extends condenser life.
  • Get the coil chemically cleaned when the smell starts. Do not wait for it to become permanent.
  • Size the next system properly. When replacement time comes, resist the urge to go bigger. Bigger is not better in a humid climate.
